Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA) Place Book Award Winner (2022) What if cities around the world actively worked to promote the health and healing of all of their residents? Cities contribute to the traumas that cause unhealthy stress, with segregated neighborhoods, insecure housing, few playgrounds, environmental pollution, and unsafe streets, particularly for the poor and residents who are Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. Some cities around the world are already helping their communities heal by investing more in peacemaking and parks than in policing; focusing on community decision-making instead of data surveillance; changing regulations to permit more libraries than liquor stores; and building more affordable housing than highways. These cities are declaring racism a public health and climate change crisis, and taking the lead in generating equitable outcomes.

When the U.S. interstate system was constructed, spurred by the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956, many highways were purposefully routed through Black, Brown, and poor communities. These neighborhoods were destroyed, isolated from the rest of the city, or left to deteriorate over time. These huge receptacles for storing and transporting cargo have found their way into architecture to become an essential part of global building culture. Eén van de boeiende aspecten van de geschiedenis van de Hanze is dat zij eeuwenlang functioneerde zonder een organisatie te zijn. Zij was een verbond dat de leden economisch voordeel garandeerde ten opzichte van de concurrentie. Belangrijkste product is de haring uit de Baltische Zee, andere producten zijn wijn uit het Rijngebied, zout uit Lüneburg, stokvis uit Noorwegen, wol uit Engeland, stoffen uit de Nederlanden, bier uit Hamburg en Bremen en granen uit Noord-Duitsland en het Baltische gebied. Aanvankelijk was zij een verbinding van kooplieden, maar omstreeks 1300 werd zij omgezet in een stedenbond.

Het jaar 1356 is een omslagpunt. Toen werd de zogenaamde Hanzedag ingesteld als orgaan om de gemeenschappelijke belangen van het verbond te behartigen. Ondanks successen nam slechts een beperkt aantal steden regelmatig deel. Bovendien werden de vertegenwoordigers gehinderd door een te gering mandaat om besluiten te nemen.

Temporary and Tactical Urbanism examines a key set of urban design strategies that have emerged in the twenty-first century. In Owning the Street, Amelia Thorpe examines everyday experiences of and feelings about property and belonging in contemporary cities. She grounds her account in an empirical study of PARK(ing) Day, an annual event that reclaims street space from cars. A popular and highly recognizable example of DIY Urbanism, PARK(ing) Day has attracted considerable media attention, but has not yet been the subject of close scholarly examination. Focusing on the event's trajectories in San Francisco, Sydney, and Montreal, Thorpe addresses this gap, making use of extensive interview data, field work, and careful reflection to explore these tiny, temporary, and often transformative interventions.

Sinds 1980 is Vlaanderen bevoegd voor zijn ruimtelijke ordening. Het had het begin van een doortastend beleid kunnen zijn, naar het adagio van de eerste Vlaamse minister-president Gaston Geens: 'We zullen moeten bewijzen dat wat wij zelf doen, beter is.' Van dat voornemen is niets terecht gekomen. Het vierluik van de ruimtelijke ordening (plannen-vergunnen-handhaven-grondbeleid) werd tot vergunnen gereduceerd: zo veel mogelijk, met regels die afwijkingen mogelijk maakten en daarbovenop nog eens uitzonderingsregels. Ruimtelijke planning werd op Vlaams niveau doorgeschoven naar de gemeenten die er ook geen prioritair belang aan hechten. Alles kan nog steeds, overal.
De hoogste tijd dus voor een maatschappelijk debat waar de 'werkelijke' waarde van open ruimte in kaart wordt gebracht met aandacht voor ecologie, gezondheid en respect.
